Izi Aspera
Roaster, Wrecking Ball Coffee Roasters — San Francisco, California

I’m studying many subjects within the Horticulture department, but I’m extremely passionate about ecology and agroecology with a permaculture focus—not to get too technical—basically, I want to work on food accessibility and being intentional about how or where we raise and distribute crops. I’m also passionate about censorship when it comes to empowered minorities and I try my best to utilize my platforms as a photographer/painter/mixed media sculptor.

Over the past eight years, I've come out to friends and family about my identity and two years ago I started sharing that information. I am a non-binary trans person.

Over the past eight years, I've come out to friends and family about my identity and two years ago I started sharing that information. I am a non-binary trans person. Previously, fear navigated who I could and couldn't tell, but seeing more and more coffee professionals actively challenging the coffee industry’s complacency, I’ve felt more empowered to come out and also to hold others accountable.

Have I ever failed? Ha. Yes, I have failed many, many times and I don't think I would have learned to problem solve or to appreciate a learning moment if I hadn't faced so many varying degrees of failure. Taking time to understand why I’ve failed at something has helped me grow so much. I think my view of failure comes from when I learned about the scientific method in middle school. Failures are expected, well-documented, and how you find a solution to your experiment.

The fictional character I resonate most with? Somewhere between Alana from Saga or Kaiman from Dorohedoro comics.
