Barista at General Porpoise — Seattle, WA
I feel like this is gonna sound super cliché, but if I could make a change in the world I would change the way we treat one another as human beings. We are all here together living the human experience and there is no need to be so full of hatred towards one another for reasons that don't even affect us personally, like sexual orientation or religion.
One thing I'm very passionate about is community.
I think I'm a pretty passionate person overall in the sense that I always put 100% into whatever it is that I'm doing. One thing I'm very passionate about is community. I got into playing pinball about a year ago and I started going to this bar called Add-a-Ball a ton and ironically enough that's where I ended up meeting a lot of the people that live in my apartment building. My partner and our friends also really love going to that bar and that has definitely created a sense of community for me.
My mom fled El Salvador when she was 19 and moved to LA and made a life for herself, by herself.
Without a doubt, the most influential person in my life is my mom. She passed away when I was 14 but everything that woman accomplished and provided for me is completely unreal. She fled our country of El Salvador when she was around 19 and moved to LA and made a life for herself, by herself. She was the most giving and caring person that I know and was just so utterly wholesome. She was put through so much shit and how she remained strong and so positive is beyond me. I am so proud to be her daughter.
If I could wake up tomorrow having gained any one power or ability, I’d choose empathy. I’ve been trying to work on my empathy a lot more as an adult. Sometimes it's hard to realize that things aren’t always about you and that you just need to basically shut up and listen to what someone is going through without the bias of ‘Well I went through something way worse.’ That's a quality I think it would be cool to wake up and have.
One thing that people don't really know about me is that I'm super into neurology.
When I was little I was totally convinced that I was gonna go to school to study neurology. I just think that brains are super interesting since they make up literally everything about who you are as a person.
I know this is gonna sound super cheesy, but recently for Valentine's Day my partner made me this cute little handmade card and I love it. I look at it at whenever I'm feeling down about anything and it's just really special to me. It's nice to feel loved and it's also nice knowing that he took time to make it. He's an artist so along with the card he drew me a little picture and that's actually what I have as the lock screen on my phone.
